MISS ASHERTON

HISTORY OF MISS ASHERTON

The Miss Asherton Pageant originated in November 1976 under the auspices of Mr. Mario Garcia, himself only a three year resident, of the sleepy township and whom along with several other residents and town leaders longed for some kind of attraction to heir small city and also offer some extra-curricular activity for the youth accepted the challenge which launched him on a ten year term as Pageant Coordinator.

The first annual program opened with only five contestants at the high school auditorium, with trophies left over from the big Bicentennial Celebration in Carrizo Springs and donated by the Chamber of Commerce, one local guitarist entertained the packed room and Mario had no choice but to nervously serve as Master of Ceremonies.

At the end of the evening you could only hear how great everything had turned out, suggestions and ideas for a bigger program next year were already being shared from people who were convinced this event must continue and most definitely wanted Mr. Garcia back as MC!

It took a lot of collaboration from City Officials, School District, businesses and volunteers but the Miss Asherton Pageant came to be widely known for its glitz and glamour and featured entertainment from the international dance team—Golden Spurs from Laredo Nixon HS to a genuine movie star celebrity!

An average of 15 to 25 contestants always signed-up to compete for the coveted title of Miss Asherton and the program also featured a bevy of cute, unpredictable Kindergarten students in the Little Miss and Mr. Asherton competition.

After it's tenth program, Mario Garcia retired as chairperson under a well-earned applause and surprise presentation from all first ten winners of the Miss Asherton title.

The pageant continued under chairpersons whom dedicated their time and talents to uphold the annual program and special recognition is always made to Mr. and Mrs. Edward and Alamo Jaramillo (former Miss Asherton) Miranda for their contribution.

After a short absence, the pageant is once again revived under the efforts and style of Mrs. Zina Sifuentes Cruz ( a former Miss Asherton ), whom has managed to bring back the excitement and challenges of the program which helps to promote Asherton as well as make its contribution to the refine development of our youth.

The Miss Asherton Pageant Committee and the town of Asherton invite you to view the photo album of their radiant queens.
