What is a Dimmit County Sunflower?

Dimmit Sunflower (Hellanthus Praecox) Subspecies (Hirtus). This subspecies is rare and grows only in and around Carrizo Springs, usually in sandy soil. Flowering occurs from late Summer through early Fall. Plants are single and erect and may be from 50 to 60 cm tall. Stems have dense, rough, or stiff hairs. Leaves are from 2 to 7 cm wide by 3 to 9 cm long. The petals are long and narrow, almost resembling a daisy. The sunflower is the Dimmit County Chamber of Commerce logo. |
